How to Choose the Right Pet Bowl

How to Choose the Right Pet Bowl for Your Dog or Cat

The right bowl makes mealtime healthier and cleaner for your dog or cat — and keeps your floor mess-free. With so many options, here's a simple guide to choosing the best pet bowl for your furry friend.

1. Get the size right

Match the bowl to your pet's size. Small breeds and kittens need shallow, small bowls; medium and large dogs need wider, deeper ones. A bowl that's too deep can be uncomfortable for cats (whiskers hate it), while too small means constant refills. When in doubt, size up on the water bowl.

2. Choose the right material

Good pet bowls are made from durable, food-safe, easy-to-clean material. Look for bowls that don't scratch easily (scratches trap bacteria) and are simple to rinse or wipe down daily. Lightweight, unbreakable bowls are ideal for everyday use and travel.

3. Anti-slip base is a must

Pets push bowls around while eating. An anti-slip, non-skid base keeps the bowl in place, prevents spills, and stops that annoying scraping across the floor. This one feature saves you a lot of cleanup.

4. Consider elevated and slow-feeder bowls

  • Elevated / raised bowls — better posture for larger dogs and senior pets, and less strain on the neck.
  • Slow-feeder (puzzle) bowls — if your dog eats too fast, these slow them down to prevent choking, bloating and vomiting.
  • Double bowls — food and water side by side in one neat unit.
  • Water dispensers — keep fresh water available all day, great for busy homes.

5. Keep it clean

Wash food bowls after every meal and water bowls daily — pets are prone to bacteria build-up. Smooth, non-porous bowls with an easy-clean surface make this quick.
