Why Every Indoor Pot Needs a Drip Tray (and How to Pick the Size)

That little tray under a pot seems like an afterthought — but a drip tray protects your floors, your furniture and your plant's health. Here's why every indoor pot needs one, and how to pick the right size.

What a drip tray actually does

A drip tray (or saucer) sits under a pot and catches the water that drains out of the bottom. That simple job does three important things: it stops water marking your floor, shelf or furniture; it keeps excess water away from the roots so they don't rot; and it lets the plant slowly draw moisture back up through the day.

Why your plant needs the drainage

A healthy pot must drain — but that draining water has to go somewhere. Without a tray, it either damages your surfaces or, worse, people block the drainage hole to stop the mess, which drowns the roots. A tray solves both problems: free drainage and a clean floor.

How to pick the right tray size

Match the tray to the pot's base diameter, not its widest point. The tray should be a little wider than the bottom of the pot so it catches all the run-off. As a quick guide: a 6 inch pot needs roughly a 6–7 inch tray; a 10 inch pot needs about a 10–11 inch tray. Our plant saucers & trays come in multiple sizes to fit common pots.

Care tips

Empty the tray if water sits in it for more than a day — standing water can breed mosquitoes and, over time, rot roots. For a self-watering effect, add a shallow layer of pebbles in the tray so the pot sits above the water while roots sip from below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do indoor plant pots need a drip tray?

Yes — a tray catches drainage water, protects your floor and furniture, and keeps excess water away from the roots.

What size drip tray do I need?

Match the tray to the pot's base diameter, slightly wider so it catches all run-off. A 6 inch pot needs about a 6–7 inch tray.

Should water sit in the drip tray?

No — empty it if water remains for more than a day to avoid mosquitoes and root rot. A layer of pebbles keeps roots above the water.
